Funded by a wealthy Montreal tobacco manufacturer, rural New Brunswick’s first consolidated school was a model of innovation. Two visionary educators developed the curriculum, and a comprehensive program was created to support rural youth. At a time when Canadians were moving from the countryside to cities, practical courses in gardening, natural science, manual skills, and domestic science encouraged them to stay on the farm.
